Why is yen called RMB?

I've always been curious about currencies, and recently I came across something interesting. Why is the yen sometimes referred to as RMB? This doesn't make sense to me since RMB stands for Renminbi, which is China's currency. So, what's the connection between yen and RMB? Why is yen called RMB?

The official symbol for the renminbi is ¥, which may lead to confusion due to its similarity with other currencies.

Notably, ¥ is also the symbol for the Japanese yen (JPY).

To eliminate this ambiguity, the abbreviation CN¥ is adopted in some contexts. This abbreviation clearly distinguishes the Chinese yuan renminbi from the Japanese yen.
