Why do swarms happen?

I've always been curious about swarms. You see them in movies or sometimes even in real life, a group of insects, usually bees, moving together as if they're one entity. But what causes this behavior? Why do they suddenly decide to leave their homes and travel together in such large numbers? Why do swarms happen?
